BRUNA ESPOSITO

Back to all artists

1960 Born in Rome, Italy
Lives and works in Rome, Italy

One of the most important figures in Postwar and Contemporary Italian art.

Her installations are poetic compositions, metaphors of the reality that can contain a myriad of interpretations but without losing sight of the fact that everything in life is destined to pass or change.

This awareness of temporary existence gives sense to Esposito’s ephemeral nature of works. Her compositions -neat in form and radical in essence- are usually constructed with common objects, poor materials, organic and inorganic elements that do not necessarily pertain to the artistic tradition but to life experience.

In addition to tangible elements, Esposito’s art pieces often include smell, food, modulations of natural light and sounds, all embedded in a minimalist aesthetic scenery. She chooses a purposeful economy of means to focus on the message, to concentrate on symbols the most introspective side of individual and collective identity.

A visual poem where the everyday – rough, ephemeral- becomes meaningful.

Bruna Esposito has received several prestigious international awards including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1999.

Her work is also part of important private and public collections like Fondazione Maxxi (Rome), Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli (Turin) and Olnick Spanu Art Program (U.S.A.)

“If acupuncture, using a tiny point of an extremely fine needle, punctures precise spots with knowledge and tact, can have an exceptional effect toward healing and equilibrium, is art the point of the needle?”
