Juan Muñoz maintained an ongoing dialogue with art history, drawing inspiration from various periods, particularly the Renaissance and Baroque.

His work reflects the influence of artists ranging from Parmigianino to Goya, and he placed great emphasis on theatricality, illusion, and architecture as expressive tools.

His engagement with Velázquez and Goya was crucial to the creation of his works featuring figures with dwarfism, while his fascination with capturing fleeting moments recalls Velázquez’s sensibility. Like Goya, he probed the delicate boundary between humor and violence. Ultimately, Juan Muñoz’s art reflects on how viewers perceive what they see and on the interplay between stillness and movement.

Growing up in Madrid, Muñoz found one of his main sources of inspiration in the Museo del Prado. In celebration of his legacy, curator Vicente Todolí has assembled a comprehensive exhibition that invites visitors to experience and enjoy the richness and depth of Muñoz’s artistic vision.
